Fiber Optic Cable Fault Disrupts Internet in the Philippines

August 16th, 2009 by anyajulia

A fiber optic cable fault of the APCN2 on August 11, 2009 at around 10AM, disrupted Internet access services of PLDT, Smart and Globe. This is the second time the APCN2 service was disrupted since December 2006. In the last fault, Internet service was severely affected for several weeks in certain areas.

The recent disruption of service was observed only for a few days on the residential broadband services. However, call centers in Tagbilaran City were affected because the bandwidth and latency of even the corporate Internet access subscription also suffered degradation. This caused “bad lines” or choppy and dropped calls for more than 24 hours.

As of Friday, August 14, residential broadband services started to improve.
