Twitter and the Power of 140 Characters

May 10th, 2009 by techsier

Everybody has heard about Friendster, MySpace and Facebook and as if these social networks are not enough, here comes Twitter. Twitter does one thing very well: Let your followers know what you are doing in 140 characters or less. The character limit is born out of the original Twitter SMS based input of user status.

Registration on Twitter is very simple and you can immediately “twit” your status after registration. The key to successful Twitter use is to follow other twitters whose profile are of interest to you. You should also encourage a lot of your friends to follow you on Twitter so they know what you are doing now.

Of course, if you don’t want people to know what you are doing then don’t twit at that time. On their website, they answer the question ‘Why another social network?’. The answer from Twitter.com website: “Why? Because even basic updates are meaningful to family members, friends, or colleagues—especially when they’re timely.”  Even at 140 characters max, an update would indeed be meaningful if they are from people or companies we care about.  For companies like CNN, putting in their breaking news on https://twitter.com/cnnbrk allows their followers to see breaking news headlines on Twitter website and even on their mobile phones.  Very powerful way of getting news from a trusted news source.

So why not create your Twitter account now? Login to www.twitter.com. For an example of a Twitter account you can follow, go to http://twitter.com/boholnews or http://twitter.com/techsier. Then if you like our updates, click on ‘Follow’ to be updated of the status of these accounts.  Over time, the network builds up and then it will get even more fun.  Enjoy.
