While there are countless websites lurking around the net, few can only be worth our time. The internet was created for the purpose of communication of information whose father is Tim Berners-Lee. Technicality aside, let’s review some of the most relevant features of the internet that we can effectively and efficiently benefit from. Usually, we enter the portal of net for research purposes, to chat and email our friends and relatives here and abroad, to watch videos on youtube, to “friendster” and among others. There are other activities on the net that are just waiting for you to unravel.
Blogging
Ever heard of it? Maybe, since this is the ‘in’ thing nowadays. Comments like ‘Do you have a blog?’ or ‘Just read my blog about my opinion on that!’ must not intimidate you. Never be left behind and write about anything under the sun! And don’t get the excuse that you are not a writer because all of us definitely got something to say about the weather, news, movies, life, love, religion, politics, technology, and (fill in your desired topic here). Get your free blog account at wordpress.com, blogspot.com, or you can buy your own domain. Make your blog popular by making friends with fellow bloggers in blogcatalog.com or mybloglog.com. Who knows, your blog will someday get the attention of the people of 2009 Philippine Blog Awards!
Facebook
Say goodbye to friendster and say hello to your new best friend, Facebook! Ever wanted a community site that provides real-time features like chatting with online friends, status updates, forum, blogging, videos, photo tagging, groups, fan pages among others? Facebook has all of these and more in one package. The best part is it does not stress your eyes from messy colors, distracting ads, broken links, down server, and other unstability problems. If at first you find it difficult to familiarizing its features, start by using those which are familiar to you like email and uploading photos and the rest will follow. It is real-time so if your cousin on the other side of the globe is logged on to Facebook, then click on Online Friends and way to go chatting with him or her. If you are a fan of Beyonce, Starbucks or Titanic, then be a fan on their Fan page. Who says community sites are just about ‘who’s viewed me’?
Google Apps
Google Apps is a service from Google for using custom domain names with several Google products. It features several Web applications with similar functionality to traditional office suites, including: Gmail, Google Calendar, Talk, Docs and Sites (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Apps).
Google just got a lot better with this new facility of theirs. Their online word document, spreadsheet and presentation are sure great aids for a group of people, say a project team or a club, who needs to share files and simultaneously edit these files yielding results with minimal errors and maximum collaboration. So if your group has a very long thesis to encode, do it online with Google Docs so all of you can have access to it anywhere anytime since you will no longer need to save it in an external flash drive. In case you are typing and brownout occurs suddenly, Google has a feature that saves your document automatically. So the next time you login and view your document, it is as if you saved it yourself.
