Secure yourself at WiFi hotspots

August 17th, 2008 by anyajulia

The proliferation of broadband service and WiFi technology has made computing very convenient. However, this convenience brings with it some serious security concerns. It is a common practice of some users to try to use open WiFi networks and they delight in being able to use these WiFi networks for free, without the owner of the system even knowing.

However, users should realize that a malicious person could intentionally setup and open WiFi network and “sniff” on the Internet traffic of the user, stealing personal and financial information. Laptop users should use only public WiFi networks that are operated by reputable Internet service providers.

On the other hand, users setting up WiFi networks for personal use should implement at least one of the built-in security measures (like MAC Address Filtering) to avoid unauthorized persons to use their network and connect to their computers.
